Nowadays, everybody is able to create music from their own bedroom studio…

This is because of how affordable good recording gear has become, but also because the information is much more accessible now.

Even though you can find almost anything online for absolutely free, it may still be a good idea to enroll in some courses which can provide you with additional knowledge.

In this article, I will go over some general music production courses, others strictly aimed at electronic music, film scoring, producing music for games, DJing, and more.

Specialization in Music Production

Best General Music production Course overall (All genres)!

Let’s get started…

General Music production Courses

These courses are all about teaching you how to produce music in general and aren’t geared specifically towards one genre of music or style.

Specialization in Music Production

Level: Beginner.

Offered by Berklee College of Music (Coursera)

This Music Production Specialization isn’t just a single course but rather a specialization.

A specialization is comprised of more than one course and it allows you to start with any of the courses, in this case four, that you’d like.

The courses this specialization is comprised of are;

As soon as you sign up for one, you’re also already signed up for the whole specialization and you can either choose to just complete one course or the whole specialization.

Basically, if you think that you just need the knowledge of one of the four courses, you can complete it and then simply cancel the subscription.

Important Note: Some of the specializations will have a couple of the courses in common!

This means that if you enroll in a specialization that has the “Pro Tools Basics” course in it, it will also count towards the progress of any other specialization that also has that course…

Basically, what this means is that you don’t need to repeat any of the courses if you want to do multiple specializations.

During this specialization you will learn a lot of the basic fundamentals of music production, meaning that this is a course mainly aimed at beginners.

The final stage of this course is where you produce a song yourself with consistent feedback from the peer review process.

How much does it cost?

The great thing about Coursera is that they give you a 7-day free trial and THEN this course will end up costing you about $40 a month.

Remember that you can cancel your subscription at any time if you no longer feel like the course provides you with any useful information.

With Coursera, you can earn a certificate after you’ve completed these courses and the hands-on project, which may come in handy if you’re looking for employment.

What you will learn

  • The technical aspects of music production.
  • How to use the Pro Tools DAW.
  • How to record, edit, mix, etc.
  • Identify and use reference tracks to establish a vision for your production
  • Edit your tracks while using your reference tracks and emotional and dynamic timelines to realize your vision for your production
  • Use the Production Check-List to run an efficient and well-organized recording session
  • Evaluate your mix by critically listening to it on different sound systems (earbuds, in the car, sound system, computer, etc.)

If you are a beginner who needs to learn the basics, then the Specialization in Music Production is a fantastic course to consider.

It covers all the basic knowledge you need, plus you can actually produce a song and get feedback which is one of the best ways to improve.

The DIY Musician Specialization

Level: Beginner

Offered by Berklee College of Music (Coursera).

The DIY Musician specialization will teach you the process of writing music, recording, and producing it.

All of this will be done with Pro Tools, which is the industry standard when it comes to DAWs.

You will also learn how to develop an artist identity, how to develop a brand for your music, and how to successfully run crowdfunding campaigns in order to fund your music career.

The duration of this specialization is around 7 months if you spend about 4hrs a week on it.

This specialization consists of four courses which are;

As I mentioned earlier, some of the courses in each specialization are shared and the progress of one course, let’s say “Pro Tools Basics”, will count towards all the specializations which contain that course.

How much does it cost?

You get a 7-day free trial and THEN this course will end up costing you about $40 a month which can be canceled any time, even if you only finished the 7-day free trial.

What you will learn

  • Tools and techniques to write more compelling songs.
  • Develop your identity and vision as an artist.
  • Use Pro Tools to record and produce your original music.
  • Strategies to plan, launch and manage a successful crowdfunding campaign.

These Coursera specializations are excellent, plus, like already mentioned, they share some of the same courses meaning that you can finish them both quicker without having to repeat any of the content.

The Art of Music Production

Level: Intermediate.

Offered by Berklee College of Music (Coursera).

The Art of Music Production course is far shorter than the ones I previously listed since it should take you about 15hs to complete, but it’s also a part of the previous specializations.

They recommend you complete it in four weeks by just doing a couple of hours a week to better absorb the information.

The emphasis of this course is on mastering tangible artistic concepts while leaving the choice of gear you decide to use to you…

This course teaches you how to record on almost any device, including smartphones, and to actually make it sound nice.

One of the assignments consists in posting your own songs for peer review as well as reviewing your fellow classmate’s songs.

What you will learn

  • Discuss why one musical recording is more compelling than another and identify the unique elements of the recording that contribute to it
  • Begin to assess and establish your identity, vision, and intention as an artist and producer
  • Write and develop a compelling piece of music by utilizing various tools
  • Establish the sonic signature of your production by utilizing specific production techniques

It’s a great short course for anyone who wants to develop their ears, but remember that it’s also a part of the previous two specializations, meaning that if you complete this course it will count towards the progress of those specializations.

Noiselab Courses

If you are primarily into electronic music then Noiselab is definitely for you since they offer hundreds of courses that range all the way from general information to plugin-specific ones, so you have a lot to choose from.

Important note: They focus mainly on Ableton Live tutorials so keep that in mind before moving forward if you only use other DAWs. What this means for you is that you won’t get as many courses as there may be on other sites, but they are all extremely detailed Ableton Live ones…

They offer over 500 courses for all levels and what’s even better is that you can access all of them by paying for the monthly membership, or you could pay for a single course individually, but this is generally much more expensive.

How much does it cost?

You have a couple of options here;

  • Paying a membership for $23 a month where you get access to all the courses.
  • Paying for every individual course.
  • Pay $145 annually for the membership (access to all courses)
