Does GuitarTricks teach Bass?

So, you’re looking for a website that will teach you to play the bass through their online lesson system and naturally, you think of GuitarTricks; I mean, why wouldn’t such a popular website that teaches guitar also teach the bass?

Well, in this post I will give you the answer to that question as well as provide you with some alternative websites to learn to play the bass.

Let’s get started!

Does GuitarTricks teach Bass?

GuitarTricks doesn’t feature bass lessons since they mainly focus on teaching guitar, but they that the skills learned will translate directly to the bass guitar. Their competitors, Jam Play and Fender Play, however, do offer bass lessons.

This is what GuitarTricks’ official response to this question is;

“We primarily focus on 6 string electric/acoustic guitar, but many of the theoretical concepts we teach can also be applied to bass guitar. We suggest that you simply sign up for Full Access and check out all of our lessons.

To the uninitiated, guitar and bass guitar have a lot more things in common than you might think, and since they are tuned the same way, which means that chords, scales, arpeggios, etc., are going to be played exactly the same, most of the concepts that you learn on guitar will directly translate to the bass.

The only difference is that in most cases, the bass guitar only features four strings while the guitar has six.

Now, even though you could learn the basic concepts by watching guitar lessons, I wouldn’t recommend it because they are completely different instruments that fill a different need in a band.

This is why I’d actually recommend that you either go to individual in-person lessons, or that you sign up to a website that really does offer bass lessons.

Why doesn’t GuitarTricks offer Bass Lessons?

Both the singing and piano modules are short and don’t offer as many lessons, nor as in-depth.

However, if they were to create online bass lessons, then they would need to create something that resembles the ones about guitar, and that would mean hiring a lot of instructors, creating thousands of hours’ worth of material, etc.

And the thing with bass guitar is that the customer base is nowhere near as big as the one for guitar.

For some reason, when people have to choose between one instrument or the other, they tend to go for the guitar… I don’t know why that is since the bass is extremely fun to play, but it happens.

So, I guess that their hesitation of creating a bass-related program must have to do with that, since they’d have to pour a lot of money into creating an entirely new bass program but with a much smaller customer base.

Note: That is just my opinion on the matter since I haven’t been able to find any official statement on behalf of GuitarTricks about this subject, but it definitely makes sense to me.

How much does GuitarTricks cost?

If you are still interested in joining GuitarTricks then you should know how much it costs and that they offer a 14-day free trial as well as a 60-day money back guarantee.

The whole point of them offering this is so that you can try their courses out and only pay if you actually find that they add some value.

Guitar Tricks costs $19.95/mo., or you can pay $179 per year.

The individual lessons vary in price depending on the teacher, but they range anywhere from $40 to $100.

If you decide to pay yearly, you will also be granted access to some additional perks, like additional jam tracks, the Song Builder Toolbox, and more.

I’d recommend signing up to the free trial since it’s, well… free, and you have nothing to lose; if you don’t like it, simply move on… but if you do, then you can sign up for the premium one.

Other alternatives

While the overall number of places to get online bass lessons is way lower than those where you can get guitar lessons, there are still a few out there that are simply excellent.

However, here are the ones that I would recommend the most:

As far as free lessons go, I’d recommend Online Bass Courses and Study Bass.

If you’re an Intermediate or Advanced player then you should probably go with JamPlay and ArtistWorks.

Online Bass Courses is great for beginners who don’t have a huge budget to work with since it’s got everything a beginner could need; from lessons on how to start playing, to free backing tracks, gear recommendations, and even a YouTube channel.

Study Bass is a site where you’ll be able to get most of the content for free; However, the premium courses only cost between $5 and $12 each.

Jam Play is a direct competitor of GuitarTricks in the sense that it features thousands of guitar lessons, dozens of instructors, and more.

However, they do offer bass lessons as well for all levels and you can access their services for $19.95/mo.

Note: There is no free trial for the bass lessons; however, if you sign up for their free guitar trial and then email them asking to add the bass lessons to the trial, they will do so, and this way you can actually check it out for free.

ArtistWorks is the most expensive one of all and you can only sign up to one specific course; this means that when you pay for the subscription you don’t get access to all the bass courses that they have, just the one that you chose.

I’d recommend Artistworks to anyone who wants to learn a very specific style of playing.

Conclusion

Even though GuitarTricks doesn’t offer any bass lessons whatsoever, there are still dozens of websites that do offer such lessons; some of them even for free.

If you’re looking for a similar experience to what GuitarTricks can provide, go with Jam Play since they actually do have bass lessons.
